our farming principals
we believe in creating a biodiverse, ecologically sound farm based on organic and permaculture principles.
little to no tilling. creating a biologically active soil that sequesters carbon.
we want to teach others how real, high quality food tastes, to understand the value of small farming, and to show that large agriculture is no longer the way to feed ourselves, our families, and our communities.
we believe in growing farm-fresh food for our community that is as rich in nutrients as it is in history.
welcome, it’s nice to meet you!
the produce
we grow strictly heirloom & open pollinated fruits, herbs & vegetables the way nature intended, without chemical pesticides and artificial fertilizers.
no GMO's. no hybrids. ever.
varieties are chosen for flavor, not mass production.
the animals
we raise only heritage breed animals. helping to secure historic breeds stability and maintain genetic diversity.
Belted Galloway & White British cattle and our Leicester Longwool sheep are humanely raised, and free to graze throughout the pastures during the summer and are never given un-necessary antibiotics or vaccines.
the pigs help us clear pasture and clean up forest lines, the Mangalitsa and Ossabaw pig breeds are some of the most tender and delicious pork you can buy.
VT grown, certified organic hay is given during the winter months.
our heritage laying hens & meat birds roam pastures throughout the summer and are supplemented with corn free , non-gmo feeds.
we are a family of 6 that loves time together, the outdoors, family dinners, and movie nights. we love to cook, bake, and especially eat!
Janis, a chef with a passion for all things food, runs the farming operations and the kitchen. Jason has a full-time job off the farm but helps on the evenings and weekends with all things maintenance, building fences, and whatever else the farm (or his wife tells him) we may need.
Rachel, our oldest, has found her way into the food world and is the Assistant Pastry Chef to Laura Jerina at Thyme Catering in Cleveland, OH. Emily graduated from Belmont University with a Bachelors in Social Work and lives in Nashville with husband Garrett. Sarah is studying Physical Therapy at Cleveland State University and will graduate in 2025. It’s hard not to have all of them here on the farm, we miss them all while they’re off conquering the world.
Grady, our youngest, is 13 and in 7th grade. He helps feed the animals, loves to cook, go exploring and create just about anything with food. He has is own collection of granola, and can be found at our Cafe on Saturdays making coffees and pretty much running the show. He’s found himself a bit of a following at the Middlebury Farmers Market, and in the summer you can see him in action making Breakfast Sammies to order.
